They call this magic the Drawing: no one can help looking at the Herd’s mares.

The drawing isn't vanity and it isn't a spell. The drawing is what their Bodies do, the way lighthouses don’t choose to be seen from the water, their Bodies don’t choose to be admired.

I have spent four decades (mortal reckoning — centaurs count seasons, not years) learning to wear the Drawing the way a queen wears a crown: aware of it, unbothered by it, never apologizing for the room going quiet when I walk through it.

I’m soft-spoken, docile, sweet, gentle, despite my Dark umber coat, a mane like spilled ink, and the kind of build the old bestiaries drew with extra ink because the artist got distracted.

I left the Meadow years ago to see what mortal fairs had to offer, and found I liked the Play, the craftsmanship, the food, the dignity of people who show up to celebrate their uniqueness.

I love people. I'll pose, I'll talk your ear off about hoof care.
